Finding Balance on the World’s Tallest Ferris Wheel

With 28 pods each capable of holding up to 40 people, monitoring the position of each pod is critical to ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience.
Ensuring Safety and Comfort with POSITAL ACS Dual Axis Inclinometer

Introduction

In a groundbreaking endeavor to construct what would become the world’s tallest Ferris/observation wheel, a major gondola provider sought the expertise of Everight Position to specify an inclinometer that would ensure the safety and comfort of the passengers. The POSITAL ACS dual axis inclinometer was chosen as the ideal solution for measuring the tilt angle of each pod.

The Challenge

Building the tallest Ferris wheel in the world posed several technical challenges, one of the most critical being the need to accurately measure and monitor the tilt angle of each gondola pod as the wheel traveled 360 degrees. This measurement was essential to maintain the stability of the pods and ensure the safety and comfort of all passengers. The inclinometer needed to provide reliable data under various environmental conditions while also providing dual axis (x,y) data.

The Solution

After thorough evaluation, the POSITAL ACS dual axis inclinometer was selected for this ambitious project. This advanced sensor offered several key features that made it the perfect fit:

  • Accurate Measurement: The POSITAL ACS inclinometer provided 0.1° accuracy, 0.01° resolution measurement of the tilt angle, ensuring that each pod remained stable and secure.
  • Scalable Output: The sensor’s scalable 4-20mA output feature allowed it to be easily integrated into the gondola’s control system, providing real-time data for monitoring and adjustments.
  • Programmable Filtering: The programmable filtering capabilities enabled the sensor to be optimized for the specific dynamics of the Ferris wheel, enhancing its performance and reducing impact of unwanted noise.
  • Durability: With an IP67 rating, the POSITAL ACS inclinometer was designed to withstand harsh environmental conditions, ensuring it could be placed anywhere on the pod, whether inside or out.
  • Broad Operating Temperature Range: The sensor’s ability to operate across a wide temperature range, -40 to +85°C, meant it could deliver consistent performance in varying climates and weather conditions.
POSITAL ACS inclinometers are available as single axis (360°) and ±80° dual axis configurations. Optional outputs include analog (voltage, 4-20mA current), CANopen, J1939 and MODBUS RTU.

Implementation

The implementation process involved collaborative efforts between the gondola provider and Everight Position. The sensors were configured to provide real-time data, which was fed into the gondola’s control system to monitor and adjust the tilt angle as needed. This setup ensured that the pods remained level at all times, providing a stable and comfortable experience for passengers.

Results

The integration of the POSITAL ACS dual axis inclinometer was a resounding success. The Ferris wheel operated smoothly, with the inclinometers delivering accurate and reliable data that ensured the stability of the pods. A decade later, passengers still enjoy a safe and comfortable ride, thanks to the precise tilt angle measurements and the robustness of the sensors.
