Part no.: G103
• CSA approved to: Class I, Zone 0
• Sensor Mounting: Flange or Body ClampsSpring loaded pushrod option available
• Available in any measurement range from 0-2mm to 0-50mm (for 51-100mm range see P133)
• Sealed to IP65/67 depending on connector/cable option
The intrinsically safe G103 is CSA approved for use in potentially explosive gas/vapour atmospheres. It is designed for a wide range of industrial applications and is ideal for OEMs seeking good sensor performance in situations where a short-bodied sensor is required for operation in hazardous areas. The unit is compact and space-efficient, being responsive along almost its entire length, and like all Positek sensors provides a linear output proportional to displacement. Each unit is supplied with the output calibrated to the travel required by the customer, from 0-2mm to 0-50mm and with full EMC protection built in.
Overall performance, repeatability and stability are outstanding over a wide temperature range.
The sensor has a rugged stainless steel body and plunger. It is easy to install and set up, mounting options include flange and body clamps. The plunger can be supplied free or captive, with female M4 thread, or spring-loaded with a ball end. The G103 also offers a wide range of mechanical options, environmental sealing is to IP65 or IP67 depending on selected cable or connector options.
Positek intrinsically safe sensors are designed to be used with a galvanically isolated amplifier . Approved galvanic isolation amplifiers (G005) are available from Positek; there is a choice of 0.5-9.5V or 4-20mA transmission outputs.
The sensor can be installed with a cable length up to 1km between the sensor and the amplifier.

Tiny Tech, Big Impact: Rotary Encoders Are a Critical Link the Agrobot Revolution
A recent GlobalData report highlights the impressive growth of the robotics industry in agriculture (reaching $218 billion by 2030), a key component behind this revolution often goes unnoticed: the rotary encoder. These unsung heroes convert rotational motion into precise electrical signals, playing a vital role in ensuring the smooth, accurate movements of agricultural robots.
TMR: A New Revolution in Magnetic Rotary Encoders
Abstract: Tunnel magnetoresistance (TMR) sensing is an exciting new chapter for magnetic-based rotary encoders. Requiring less current, while offering higher signal strength, many of the inherent short comings of Hall Effect based sensors can be addressed.
Technical Note: Intrinsically Safe vs. Inherently Safe Sensors
Intrinsically safe (IS) sensors are designed to operate safely in hazardous areas where there is a risk of explosion. IS sensors limit the amount of electrical and thermal energy that can be released in the event of a fault, to a level below that which is capable of igniting flammable gases, vapors, or dust.
Intrinsically Safe Absolute Rotary Encoders
In the most hazardous environments, where an explosive atmosphere consisting of flammable gas or vapor is regularly present and a sensor fault cannot be risked, Intrinsically Safe (IS) sensors may be the best sensing option. Generally, these sensors are paired with a barrier which limits the amount of electrical and thermal energy that can enter the Hazardous Area to an amount that is so small that even in the situation of a sensor fault, there is not enough energy to cause an ignition.
