Positek’s Responsiveness Keeps Things Moving Forward

How a transmission OEM benefited from Positek’s flexible P100 design

Introduction

A transmission manufacturer recently faced a challenging situation involving the Positek P100 in-cylinder linear sensors. This case study explores the problem encountered, the innovative and swift solution provided by Positek and Everight, and the ultimate satisfaction of the customer.

The Problem

The transmission manufacturer was integrating Positek P100 in-cylinder linear sensors in a position state feedback setup. These P100 sensors are renowned for their accuracy and reliability, making them an ideal choice for such applications. However, during the final assembly of the device, a number of small out of spec parts began to compound one another and resulted in an overall increase in stroke length. This miscalculation presented a significant problem as the project was pressing against stringent deadlines.

Ordering new sensors to fit the required specifications would not only take too long but would also result in scrapping thousands of dollars of perfectly good sensors. The manufacturer urgently needed a quick solution to address this critical issue and avoid any setback in their schedule.

The Immediate Solution

Faced with this urgent need, the transmission manufacturer reached out to Everight and Positek, hoping for an expedited solution. The manufacturer proposed the idea of obtaining a new set of longer Target Tubes that could be quickly shipped, allowing them to take care of any necessary output scaling changes themselves. However, the Target Tubes typically aren’t sold by themselves, and no formal part numbers were yet defined.

Understanding the gravity of the situation, an after-hours call was made to Positek and they immediately agreed to assist. Leveraging their flexibilitu and commitment to customer satisfaction, Positek expedited the definition, setup and production of the longer Target Tubes. Within just two working days, the new Target Tubes were out the door and in transit to the customer, ensuring minimal disruption to the project timeline.

Original assembly (left) shows the original Target Tube was too short to provide the initial overlap needed with the sensor. The P100 (right) is available in a wide variety of configurations to provide in-cylinder hydraulic positioning as well as other measurement.

The Customer's Experience

The transmission manufacturer was highly appreciative of the swift and effective response from Positek and Everight. They shared that they had been working with the founding engineers of Positek and the underlying inductive technology for over 30 years. The customer commented, “Positek has just affirmed Everight’s praise for them as a supplier.” This statement underscores the reliability and responsiveness of Positek as a trusted partner in the manufacturing industry.

Closing Thoughts

This case study highlights the importance of having reliable partners who can deliver under pressure. Positek’s rapid response to the manufacturer’s urgent need for an unconventional solution exemplifies their commitment to customer satisfaction and their ability to provide innovative solutions in a timely manner. More than another sale, the situation sparked a phone call and a genuine conversation with a passionate engineer who had used the technology to solve practical problems for over three decades. It is for the hope of these phone calls that Everight and its vendors strive to provide the best sensors in the world.
